Audition song suggestions for the character Margaret Johnson (soprano)

Margaret is a Southerner visiting Florence, Italy, with her adult daughter, Clara. She is refined, confident, and practical. Her maternal love is solid but presents as over-protectiveness because of her strength. She has an emotionally distant husband back in the states, so when her daughter falls in love, she has to challenge her own perception of romance. Margaret is equal parts caring and fearsome.

Audition song suggestions for the character Clara Johnson (coloratura soprano)

Clara is Margaret’s 26-year-old daughter on vacation with her in Florence. She is vivacious, curious, and just as strong-willed as her mother. Despite her age, however, Clara lacks a certain maturity because of an accident in her youth. This does not mean she has lost her faculties, but instead, they are colored with a child’s blunt observational skills, curiosity, and hopefulness. Her view on life and love is refreshing and moving.

Audition song suggestions for the character Fabrizio Naccarelli (lyric tenor)

Fabrizio is the young Italian man who crosses Clara’s path and consequently pursues her. Although concerned about his status compared to her Southern sophistication, he is otherwise undeterred. He earnestly yearns to be a part of her world, learning her language and treating her with the utmost respect. The two share an adoration, naivete, and sweeping young love with each other. Fabrizio sings and speaks Italian, and has a heavy dialect when speaking English.

Audition song suggestions for the character Signora Naccarelli (soprano)

Signora is the bedrock of the Naccarelli family– loving mother to Fabrizio and Guiseppe and intelligent and caring wife to Signor Naccarelli. She is quick-witted and has a sense of humor helpful in handling life’s crises. Signora admittedly does not speak English, but she breaks the fourth wall in “Auitami” to translate her family’s outburst in English with a thick and expressive accent.
