Audition song suggestions for the character Troy Bolton (tenor)

Troy is the star of East High’s basketball team under the watchful eye of his father, who happens to be his coach. He returns from summer vacation having discovered not only a love for singing, but also a new love interest named Gabriella. Although he is expected to remain loyal to the team and to his father, he and Gabriella spend the play creating ripples in the high school social dynamic as they fight to stay true to themselves.

Audition song suggestions for the character Chad Danforth (tenor)

Chad is Troy’s best friend and fellow basketball star. He cares deeply about the championship and when he learns that Troy isn’t focusing on the game the way he should, he works together with Taylor to end the distraction. Eventually, he learns that there might be more to life than just basketball and learns from Troy and Gabriella’s bravery. He is a natural leader, quick on the court and off, and may have an interest in Taylor.

Audition song suggestions for the character Zeke Baylor (baritone)

Another member of the Wildcats basketball team, Zeke is an energetic supporting player with a few secrets– a crush on Sharpay and a love of baking. He is another example of high school culture pressuring students to stick to the “status quo” instead of cultivating their own individuality.

Audition song suggestions for the character Sharpay Evans (mezzo)

Sharpay is the self-pronounced ‘star’ of East High who is not-so-subtly enraged by new student Gabriella’s beautiful singing voice, plus Troy’s affection for her (which she craves). She is Ryan Evans’ older twin and together they dominate the drama club, often playing opposite leading roles. Their paths diverge, however, when Sharpay goes too far to sabotage Troy and Gabriella’s chance to star in the school musical.

Audition song suggestions for the character Ryan Evans (tenor)

Ryan is the shadow to Sharpay’s sun, despite being just as talented. Together they dominate the East High drama club, often playing opposite each other. Ryan seems very complacent to follow Sharpay’s command, but he eventually speaks out when she has gone too far to destroy Troy and Gabriella.

Audition song suggestions for the character Gabriella Montez (alto)

Gabriella is new to East High but finds a familiar face in Troy, whom she met on her family vacation over the summer. They discovered a mutual love of singing together, but back at school they are reminded of their place among the cliques and labels. Gabriella is torn between her love of science and her new passion for performing in the same way that Troy is torn between basketball and his new passion. Gabriella is intelligent, loyal, and sees above the ruthlessness of the “status quo.”

Audition song suggestions for the character Taylor McKessie (alto)

Taylor is the president of the science club who very quickly discovers Gabriella’s gifts and potential as a competitor. She recruits her onto the decathlon team, but like Chad, notices that this obsession with musicals and her romance with Troy is distracting her. She works together with Chad to bring them back to earth, but eventually realizes the harm she is doing and finds a way to support the two and their dreams.
