“Come Down From The Tree” cut song from Once On This Island
Audition song suggestions for the character Tonton Julian (baritone)
Also a peasant on the island, Tonton and his wife Mama Euralie rescue Ti Moune after she survives a terrible storm. They take her in and Tonton becomes her loving and protective father.
“The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha
Audition song suggestions for the character Ti Moune (soprano)
Ti Moune and her adoptive parents live as peasants on an island that is separated by class and color. She prays that the Gods give her a purpose in life, and their answer leads her to the center of a tragic love story with Daniel, a member of the upper-class, lighter-skinned descendents of French settlers and natives. She is curious, selfless, passionate, and determined.
“Spark of Creation” from Children of Eden
Audition song suggestions for the character Daniel Beauxhomme (tenor)
Daniel is a descendent of French settlers and Caribbean natives who make up the highest social class on the island. In answering Ti Moune’s prayer, the Gods provoke a car accident in which Daniel is rescued by Ti Moune. Subsequently the two fall in love, but Daniel is ultimately unable to leave his privilege and obligations for her.
“Maria” from West Side Story
Audition song suggestions for the character Papa Ge (tenor)
Papa Ge, the Demon of Death, convinces Ti Moune to trade her life for Daniel’s in an effort to prove to Erzulie that death is more powerful than love. Like many of the Gods, this role does not have to be gender-specific and was played by a woman in the most recent revival.
“Hellfire” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Audition song suggestions for the character Asaka (mezzo)
Asaka is the Mother of the Earth– joyful and nurturing, she loves to provide for her children. It is Asaka who gives Ti Moune her final resting place, a reminder to the villagers that love rises above differences and class.
“Ain’t It Good” from Children of Eden
Audition song suggestions for the character Agwe (baritone)
Agwe is the God of Water whose playfulness and power of water propels much of the action of the play. It is because of his ability that Ti Moune is found as an orphan after a storm, Daniel’s car crashes, and Ti Moune peacefully meets her death at the end of the play.
“The World Above (Reprise)” from The Little Mermaid
Audition song suggestions for the character Erzulie (mezzo)
Erzulie is the Goddess of Love who passionately spars with Papa Ge over the power of love versus death. She believes love is stronger than anything, and has immense faith in the young lovers they have thrown together.
