With lots of binge-watching in all of our foreseeable futures, try queuing up one of these five great TV shows that feature some of Broadway’s finest stars.
1. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
It seems like every single actor in NYC has been on this long-running police procedural at one point or the other. The show has featured a laundry list of notable Broadway actors over the years, including Leslie Odom Jr., Laura Benanti, Danny Burstein, Billy Porter, Andy Karl, Daveed Diggs, Ari’el Stachel, Aaron Tveit, Brian D’Arcy James and more. With over 300 episodes packed with twists and turns, SVU is the perfect show to put on for a long binge-watching session.
Where to Watch: Hulu
2. Hollywood
This new miniseries from producer Ryan Murphy tells the story of several aspiring actors and producers trying to make it in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and the cast is bursting with Broadway vets. Darren Criss stars along with recent double-Tony nominee Jeremy Pope, Patti LuPone and Joe Mantello.
Where to Watch: Netflix
3. The Good Fight
The best show on streaming that you aren’t watching, this spinoff of legal drama The Good Wife has showcased a slew of Broadway veterans during its run. Audra McDonald is a series regular, and Bernadette Peters and Taylor Louderman both had multi-season arcs, as well as Corey Cott and Rob McClure. While this critical hit can only be watched on CBS All-Access, the cornucopia of Broadway talent makes it worth the price of admission.
Where to Watch: CBS All-Access
4. Glee
It’s hard to believe that Ryan Murphy’s hit musical dramedy premiered eleven years ago, and even more difficult to believe it was most audience’s first introduction to Broadway stars Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison. The show gave us tons of memorable guest stars and indelible musical moments over the years; who can forget Kristen Chenowith dueting with Lea Michele on “Maybe This Time”, or Jonathan Groff belting his face off in “Bohemian Rhapsody”? If you missed out on becoming a “Gleek” the first time around, now’s the perfect time to dive in and see what all the fuss was about.
Where to Watch: Netflix
5. Fosse/Verdon
This stellar biographical miniseries gives viewers a glimpse into the personal and professional lives of director/choreographer Bob Fosse and actress/dancer Gwen Verdon, played by Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. Both leads are Broadway veterans, but this miniseries features a plethora of other actors who got their start on the Broadway stage, including Laura Osnes, Ethan Slater, Brandon Uranowitz, Bianca Marroquin, Tyler Hanes, Santino Fontana and Norbert Leo Butz as playwright Paddy Chayefsky. Lin Manuel-Miranda even has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as All That Jazz actor Roy Scheider.
Where to Watch: Hulu
Honorable Mentions:
The Politician, starring Dear Evan Hansen’s Ben Platt, and Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan, both of which are on Netflix. Also, with the news of its upcoming Broadway adaptation, there’s never been a better time to catch up on Smash, featuring everyone from Katharine McPhee to Megan Hilty to Christian Borle.
