5 Things You Can Expect From The New Mean Girls Musical

On Saturday, November 4th, I made the trek to the National Theatre in D.C. to see the World Premiere of the Broadway-bound musical, Mean Girls! Guys, let me tell you something, it’s “So Fetch!” I’m a big fan of the movie and, probably like you, quoted it with my friends all the time. My expectations were high – and they were fulfilled. From start to finish, I could not wipe the smile off my face. Since the show was only in its first week of previews, there have most likely been many changes since I first saw it, but here are some of my favorite parts of Mean Girls from when I saw it!

Casting – You Can’t Sit With Us

All your favorite characters from the Mean Girls movie are perfectly portrayed with this all-star cast! Erika Henningsen is perfection as the math-loving leading lady Cady Heron and Kyle Selig is a grool newcomer that plays a charming Aaron Samuels. The “Plastics,” led by queen bee Taylor Louderman as Regina George with sidekicks Kate Rockwell as Karen Smith and Ashley Park as Gretchen Wieners, were shiny and flawless. Barrett Wilbert Weed and Grey Henson make the perfect quirky pair as Janis and Damien. Kerry Butler takes on the roles of Mrs. Norbury and Regina’s Mom. By the end of the show, you’re hoping for a chance to be able to sit with the cool cast of Mean Girls!

Costumes – On Wednesdays we wear pink!

Get in, we’re going shopping! No, seriously. I think I maxed out my credit card buying a new wardrobe after seeing the show because nothing in my closet was worthy anymore.

Iconic Lines from the movie – “You go, Glen Coco!”

There are some iconic lines from the movie that the audience wants to hear and they know when they’re coming! For instance, when Glen Coco gets his share of candy grams delivered, the audience erupted in cheers after “You go, Glen Coco!” That’s just one of several moments that delight the audience and fans of the Mean Girls movie.

Updates – I love you, George Michael!

Expect some fun updates to the Mean Girls musical that contemporizes the storyline and makes it more relevant to today’s world but you won’t be disappointed with it! It’s a hard job making such an iconic movie into a musical but with Tina Fey at the helm, there’s nothing to worry about! The Mean Girls team is doing an incredible job of keeping our favorite moments from the movie while adding a few new elements for the stage adaptation!

Music – It’s So Fetch!

Expect your cheeks to be sore when the curtain comes down on this fun, new Broadway-bound musical. Jeff Richmond (music) and Nell Benjamin (lyrics have created some bright, energetic, and catchy tunes that make it hard not to dance in your seats). Cady is like a teen Elphaba going non-stop, Regina takes down the school with the Burn Book and Janis will leave your jaw on the floor with her vocals in her solo number. This score is something we’ll be singing for years to come.
