Audition song suggestions for the character Galileo Figaro (tenor)
The protagonist of the play, Galileo, is an outcast on iPlanet– a dystopian Earth 300 years in the future, controlled by Globalsoft and ruled by the Killer Queen. He has strange dreams of lost lyrics and melodies, and we learn that he is the “bright star” of the Bohemians, fulfilling the prophecy of finding the lost live instruments and harkening the rebirth of rock and roll. Inspired by and thought to be a reincarnation of Freddy Mercury.
“Double Vision” by Foreigner
Audition song suggestions for the character Scaramouche (rock soprano)
Scaramouche is Galileo’s partner-in-crime and love interest, who meets Galileo in the hospital after the Secret Police capture both. Her sharp wit and cynicism keep the duo on track as they lead the Bohemian rebel group and fulfill the prophecy. Eventually, her talent on guitar defeats the Killer Queen and frees iPlanet from commercial, automated musical doom. Thought to be the “babe” reincarnation of Queen’s lead guitarist, Brian May.
“Invincible” by Pat Benatar
Audition song suggestions for the character Killer Queen (alto)
The power-hungry CEO of Globalsoft, the worldwide corporation responsible for suppressing all live music, and subsequently the iPlanet ruler.
“You Better Run” by Pat Benatar
Audition song suggestions for the character Khashoggi (baritone)
The right hand to Killer Queen and head of the Globalsoft Secret Police. Khashoggi ensures that all live music is destroyed, Bohemians are persecuted, rebels sent to the Seven Seas of Rhye, and commercial music homogeneity dominates. Name origins come from the Queen song, “Khashoggi’s Ship”, which references the Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.
“Space Oddity” by David Bowie
Audition song suggestions for the character Buddy (baritone)
Also known as “Pop” in some productions, Buddy is an elderly librarian and barkeep who Galileo and Scaramouche encounter in the Seven Seas of Rhye. Even the Khashoggi’s regime cannot erase the memories and “sacred musical texts” of long forbidden live music from his mind. He is a comedic character who is sometimes named from a combination of “grandfather” tropes in rock and roll music worldwide.
“In My Life” by the Beatles
Audition song suggestions for the character Brit and Oz (tenor/mezzo)
Brit and Oz are the two eccentric, leather-clad leaders of the Bohemian rebel group who strive to uncover the secrets of forbidden live music. They are unsure that Galileo is the “bright star” to fulfill the prophecy, but then believe his musical dreams are real. These characters have different names in productions, often based on male and female pop/rock icons of the day (i.e., Britney Spears and Ozzy Osbourne).
“Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen
Audition song suggestions for Ensemble Characters (all vocal types)
Ensemble roles with extreme range and skill to fill the environment with various rSecret Police, Ga Ga Kids, Teen Queens, The Bohemians, Super Yuppies, Teachers, Doctors. May also understudy leading and supporting roles.
