Audition song suggestions for the character Gabriel John Utterson (baritone)
Utterson is Dr. Jekyll’s friend, supporter, lawyer, as well as his voice of reason and confidante when trouble arises. He sometimes acts as a narrator, helping the audience through each stage of deterioration and destruction. Utterson is earnest and amiable, to be heavily contrasted by Dr. Jekyll’s spiral.
“Pilate’s Dream” from Jesus Christ Superstar
Audition song suggestions for the character Sir Danvers Carew (baritone)
Danvers is a loving father to Emma and the Chairman of the Board at St. Jude’s Hospital where Dr. Jekyll is employed. He is well-admired and gentle, and while he has concerns over Emma’s engagement to Jekyll, whom everyone declares mad and beneath her, he holds a father-like sympathy for him and his dedication to his work.
“No More” from Into the Woods
Audition song suggestions for the character Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde (tenor)
As Emma’s fiance, Dr. Jekyll is loving, loyal, and humble. As a doctor at St. Jude’s Hospital, however, he is frequently obsessive and frenetic. When he is denied permission by the Board to find a cure for his father’s destructive mental illness, he secretly uses himself as a test subject and begins experiments anyway, consequently giving life to his monstrous alter ego, a diabolical and murderous Mr. Hyde. His transformations lead to chaos and death, and ultimately his destruction. This role requires immense stamina and the creation of two distinct characters, sometimes existing in the same song together (“The Confrontation”).
“Javert’s Suicide” from Les Misérables
Audition song suggestions for the character Simon Stride (baritone)
Simon Stride is the secretary for the Board of Governors at St. Jude’s Hospital, and believes Dr. Jekyll to be a disgrace. He is steely, pompous, and not to be trusted– making no secret of his affections towards Emma, Jekyll’s betrothed, and even asks her to marry him at her own engagement party.
‘What Is It About Her?” from Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party
Audition song suggestions for the character Emma Carew (soprano)
Emma is the daughter of the aristocratic and well-respected Sir Danvers Carew. She is desired by all in her social class, which is what makes her engagement to Dr. Jekyll so troubling. She loves him unconditionally and in this way exposes her individuality and integrity. She is a match for Henry’s intellect, but also grounds him when he becomes isolated in his work. His work comes between them often, but she is supportive nonetheless. Emma is very close to her father after losing her mother some years ago.
“When I Look At You” from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Audition song suggestions for the character Lucy Harris (mezzo)
Lucy is a sex worker and burlesque performer at the Red Rat Brothel who meets Utterson and Jekyll on the night of his bachelor party. She performs a show-stopping number, “Bring On the Men,” and befriends Jekyll in conversations after. Outwardly, she is warm, electric, and sensual, but privately shows moments of vulnerability and hardships. She becomes the focus of Mr. Hyde’s deadly obsession, entwining herself in a strange dangerous romance.
