PLEASE NOTE: These descriptions may be triggering for those sensitive to school violence.
Audition song suggestions for the character JD (tenor)
Jason Dean, also known as JD, is a recent transfer to Westberg High School with a painful family history that has taken a toll on his mental health. Outwardly, however, he is mysterious, intelligent, and charming– which quickly wins the heart of Veronica Sawyer. He is the mastermind behind their plot to fake the suicides of bullies throughout the school, convincing Heather that they are merely taking a stand against social injustice. This actor may consider careful character research to understand the behavior of someone with Jason Dean’s background and propensity for violence.
“You Matter To Me” from Waitress
Audition song suggestions for the character Veronica Sawyer (mezzo)
Veronica is a senior at Westberg High. Although she is exhausted by the immaturity and hate of the teenagers around her, she can’t resist the appeal when her talent for forgery gains her acceptance into the popular (and cruel) clique, The Heathers. When she falls for the new kid, JD, she exchanges the bullying for something more sinister as one by one JD makes the school bullies disappear, and Veronica finds herself forging suicide notes. JD’s behavior spirals out of control, and Veronica listens to her conscience to end the romance and the violence.
“I’d Rather Be Me” from Mean Girls.
Audition song suggestions for the character Heather Chandler (mezzo)
Heather Chandler is the ultimate Heather and the top of the food chain at Westberg High. She is wealthy, privileged, ruthless, and power-hungry takes special care to ruin Martha for the fun of it and destroys Veronica for leaving the clique. She comes back as a ghost after she becomes JD and Veronica’s first victim (this time, by accident) and relishes in her martyrdom by the community.
“The World According to Chris” from Carrie the Musical
Audition song suggestions for the character Heather McNamara (soprano)
Heather McNamara is extraordinarily wealthy and the head cheerleader at Westberg, despite ranking third in the Heathers hierarchy. She can be as toxic as the Heathers want her to be, but her true self is more mild and vulnerable. At the school therapy session, she confesses her thoughts of depression and suicide and later nearly ends her life. By the end of the play, she is comforted by Veronica Sawyer, and the two become loyal and grateful friends.
“Once You See” from Carrie the Musical
Audition song suggestions for the character Heather Duke (alto)
Heather Duke is Heather Chandler’s second-in-command and suffers the most abuse by her until Chandler’s death. With her new-found freedom and status, she balloons into a hateful tyrant over the school and cashes in on Chandler’s posthumous fame. She leads the ridicule over Heather McNamara’s painful confession at the school therapy session, which prompts her unsuccessful suicide attempt.
“Killer Instinct” from Bring It On the Musical
Audition song suggestions for the character Martha Dunnstock (mezzo)
Martha is Veronica’s oldest and best friend. She has a heart of gold and tries to stay positive despite being the object of much abuse and fat-shaming by bullies like the Heathers and the jocks. Her friendship with Veronica is strained twice– first when Veronica assists a cruel prank by the Heathers, and second when she suspects JD of killing Ram (her kindergarten boyfriend and modern-day bully). These events bring her to attempt suicide, but she survives and ultimately forgives Veronica.
“Pretty Funny” from Dogfight
Audition song suggestions for the characters Ram Sweeney and Kurt Kelley (baritone/tenor)
Ram is the linebacker for Westberg, and Kurt is the quarterback and captain. The two perfectly fill the roles of quintessential jock/bully. Kurt is the arrogance and brains, and Ram is the brawn and the aggression– though they are both fairly stupid. Although it is almost certain that Ram harbors furtive homosexual tendencies, he was also Martha Dunnstock’s kindergarten boyfriend, a fact she holds dear. As written, Ram is a baritone, and Kurt is a tenor, though they can be switched in group numbers.
“You’re Welcome” from Moana
Audition for Ensemble (all vocal types)
Ensemble roles with extreme range and skill to fill the environment with various of high school students, teachers, and parents. Note: Ensemble members playing Kurt’s Dad and Ram’s Dad sing “My Dead Gay Son,” and they are necessarily older versions of the boys. May also understudy leading and supporting roles.
Soprano:
“One Perfect Moment” from Bring It On the Musical
“One Knight” from Wonderland
