Audition song suggestions for the character Robert (baritone)
As Robert nears his 35th birthday, he grapples with the fear of getting old and never settling down, as well fearing the alternative– marriage. Throughout the play, he observes his friends, who are all married and listens to their advice. He goes on dates, remembers former flames, and surveys his heart for answers. This character never leaves the stage and must find the layers of objectives and obstacles in this seemingly cheerful and charismatic leading role. Fun fact: this role was gender-swapped (“Bobbie!”) for the 2018 London production!
“What Can You Lose?” from the film Dick Tracy
“What Kind of Fool Am I?” from Stop the World, I Want to Get Off
Audition song suggestions for the character Sarah (mezzo)
Sarah and her husband Harry, are often arguing but are each other’s perfect match. She has a troubled relationship to food, emphasized by her very restrictive diet, and turns instead to karate and voyeurism to quell obsessive thoughts.
“Everybody Loves Louis” from Sunday in the Park with George
“What They Never Tell You” from It Shoulda Been You
Audition song suggestions for the character Harry (baritone)
Harry is Sarah’s husband, perfectly matched when it comes to obsessive tendencies and sharp wits. Harry is a recovering alcoholic who ultimately loves Sarah deeply and believes marriage is worth every karate kick to the gut.
“Her Face” from Carnival
“Make Someone Happy” from Do Re Mi
Audition song suggestions for the character Susan (soprano)
Susan is Peter’s wife and his newly announced ex-wife. She is a Southern Belle, full of charm and poise, which makes this news a complete surprise to Bobby. She cares about Bobby the way a mother would. This actor may also appear in Amy’s song as the Choirgirl.
“100 Easy Ways to Lose A Man” from Wonderful Town
“Hurry! It’s Lovely Up Here!” from On A Clear Day You Can See Forever
Audition song suggestions for the character Peter (baritone)
Peter is Susan’s husband, but not for much longer. They have amicably decided to divorce and therefore offer Bobby a refreshing perspective on his bachelorhood. Peter also confides to Bobby that he has questioned his heterosexuality, and indicates that he may want to explore it further in the future.
“Good Thing Going” from Merrily We Roll Along
“She’s A Woman” from Kiss of the Spider Woman
Audition song suggestions for the character Jenny (soprano)
Jenny is David’s mild yet clever wife. She is conservative, sweet, and quietly manipulative as she allows David to feel like the dominant partner when she has full control. She is a very good friend to Bobby.
“Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm” from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
“Poor Monty” from A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
Audition song suggestions for the character David (baritone)
David is proud to be Jenny’s husband and head of the household– or so he thinks. He is confident, affable, and has no idea that Jenny sways his judgment most of the time. Easy-going and hardworking, David is happy with his lot and believes marriage is always worth the freedom you give up.
“Once in Love With Amy” from Where’s Charley?
“I Believe In You” from How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying
Audition song suggestions for the character Amy (mezzo)
Amy is Paul’s fiancée and loves him as much as she loves over-analyzing her thoughts and fears. However thoughtful and intelligent she is, she somehow misses the fact that she is deeply frightened of marriage itself until the day of her wedding. She and Bobby have a romantic history and resulting friendship that eventually saves the wedding. This actor must have impeccable comedic timing and conquer one of the greatest patter songs of all time.
“Let’s Not Talk About Love” by Cole Porter
“If You Hadn’t, But You Did” from Two on the Aisle
Audition song suggestions for the character Paul (tenor)
Paul is Amy’s ever-patient and ever-loving fiancé. He does not panic when she loses her cool and trusts that their love is strong enough to overcome anything. If there were something stronger than marriage, he would have asked Amy for that. As it is, he is thrilled to get married and urges Bobby to do the same.
“Marry Me” from The Rink
“Take a Chance On Me” from Little Women
Audition song suggestions for the character Joanne (alto)
Joanne is a dear friend of Bobby’s who brings a little taste of cynicism and bite to the play. She is older than the others but nowhere near a nursing home, and so she exists in-between with her third husband, Larry, for Company. She only lets down her guard with him and while singing her show-stopping number “Ladies Who Lunch,” which is famous for its social commentary.
“Some People” from Gypsy
“Maybe This Time” from Cabaret
Audition song suggestions for the character Larry (baritone)
Larry is Joanne’s husband. He does a beautiful job of grounding her when she acts out or lightening the mood when she broods. Composed, yet zany on impulse, Larry is unconditionally loving and also a good friend to Bobby.
“Come Back to Me” from On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever
“Easy to Love” from Born to Dance
Audition song suggestions for the character Marta (mezzo)
Marta is Bobby’s girlfriend. Slightly younger than Bobby, Marta has opinions and commentary to spare. A stylish and charismatic young woman, her love of city life takes flight as she leads the ensemble in “Another Hundred People.”
“West End Avenue” from The Magic Show
“The Miller’s Son” from A Little Night Music
Audition song suggestions for the character Kathy (mezzo)
Kathy is an old flame of Bobby’s who is thrilled to leave NYC and start a family with her new partner. Bobby and Kathy now have a caring friendship, and she genuinely wishes him the best.
“What You Don’t Know About Women” from City of Angels
“When Did I Fall In Love?” from Fiorello!
Audition song suggestions for the character April (mezzo)
April is a flight attendant with lackluster social skills and one of Bobby’s girlfriends. Seemingly and admittedly “dumb,” the actor playing April must sift through the self-deprecation and ditziness to find a woman who is thoughtful, earnest, and trying her best.
“That’ll Show Him” from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
“Frank Mills” from HAIR
