Audition song suggestions for the character Julie Jordan (soprano)
Julie has no interest in marriage and would rather continue working at the mill. However, when she falls deeply in love with the carnival barker, Billy, She makes an exception despite the town’s warnings. Her thoughtfulness and fierceness in love prove a disadvantage as accepting his abuse. She grows up to become a profoundly loving and much less naive mother.
“Love, Don’t Turn Away” from 110 in the Shade
Audition song suggestions for the character Billy Bigelow (baritone)
Billy Bigelow was Mrs. Mullin’s premiere carnival barker– commanding, alluringly, rough around the edges. These qualities are not as helpful when he becomes a husband to the young and refined Julie Jordan. Having never been taught, Billy finds himself struggling to be loving or gentle when he learns Julie is pregnant. As the townspeople predict, he brings tragedy to their lives with poor choices and only finds redemption at the end of the play, far from his loved ones.
“Never Will I Marry” from Greenwillow
Audition song suggestions for the character Carrie Pipperidge (soprano)
Carrie prefers a life more conventional for the period, despite being Julie’s best friend. She dreams of becoming a wife and mother and sees endless possibilities in the happiness it will bring her. She marries the like-minded Enoch, and they have nine children.
“I Like Him” from Drat! The Cat!
Audition song suggestions for the character Enoch Snow (tenor)
Enoch is a shy fisherman who woos the excitable Carrie Pipperidge despite knowing more about fish than women. Enoch and Carrie expand both the business and their family every year as the number of boats and children increase. Enoch rises in social class, but his social graces remain the same.
“Once Upon a Time Today” from Call Me Madam
Audition song suggestions for the character Nettie Fowler (mezzo)
Nettie Fowler is Julie’s older cousin, who supports both Julie and Billy when they have nowhere to stay after their wedding. She is also an emotional stronghold for Julie, is a prominent figure in town, and leads the two largest group numbers in the show.
“Suzy Is a Good Thing” from Pipe Dream
Audition song suggestions for the character Jigger Craigin (baritone)
Jigger is a criminal and whaler who befriends Billy and convinces him to attempt a robbery, eventually leading to his ruin.
“You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught” from South Pacific
Audition song suggestions for the character Louise Bigelow (mezzo)
Louise is Billy and Julie’s 15-year-old daughter. She is troubled by her family’s history, and the children in town do not let her forget it. This actress may be in the ensemble in the first act, but as Louise in the second act, she leads the six-minute ballet.
“Everybody’s Got a Home But Me” from Pipe Dream
“What Did I Have That I Don’t Have?” from On a Clear Day You Can See Forever
