Audition song suggestions for the character Katherine (soprano)
Katherine is a widowed mother and the ambitious owner of a catering business who is about to remarry and cater her own wedding at the same time. She has trouble relating to and has high expectations of her teenage daughter Ellie, and their disagreements are exacerbated by the grieving process, teenage hormones, wedding stress, and the change in their family dynamic. When her wedding is about to be featured in a major magazine, Ellie and Katherine mysteriously switch bodies. Chaos ensues, but they eventually garner the understanding and respect for each other that they’ve been missing.
“Always Starting Over” from If/Then
Audition song suggestions for the character Ellie (mezzo)
Ellie is the teenage daughter of Katherine and older sister to Fletcher. Since her father died five years ago, Katherine has had trouble reaching her. Ellie skips class, refuses to tidy her appearance, and often acts unkind or sarcastic towards her family. Tensions rise the closer it gets to her mother’s wedding to Mike, whom she is reluctant to accept. Ellie and her mother mysteriously switch bodies just in time for the school’s Annual Scavenger Hunt, hosted by her crush, Adam. While her mother goes in her place in Ellie’s body, Ellie (in Katherine’s body) learns how much her mother does for her on a daily basis, and also learns to accept Mike and give her little brother more credit. This actor has the opportunity to show great maturity, embodying a mother’s wisdom in a teenage body.
“Safer” from First Date
Audition song suggestions for the character Fletcher (tenor)
Fletcher is Ellie’s 10-year-old brother who is optimistic, creative, and light-hearted. He loves puppets, loves his sister, and is excited to get a new stepdad since he has few memories of his father who died five years ago. When Ellie, in his mother’s body, tells him some harsh realities through the lens of grief, Fletcher is hurt and considers running away. Adam, Ellie’s high school crush, has a heart-to-heart with Fletcher and convinces him to stick it out, which he does because he loves his mother and sister more than anything.
“Alone in the Universe” from Seussical
Audition song suggestions for the character Mike Riley (baritone)
Mike is a contractor who fell in love with Katherine the first day they met. He understands the loss each of the Blakes have felt and he approaches them with the utmost patience and kindness. Fletcher and Katherine can’t wait to make him a part of the family, but he knows it will take Ellie some time to come around. He will do whatever it takes to provide this little family with all the love and acceptance they deserve.
“Marry Me A Little” from Company
Audition song suggestions for the character Adam (tenor)
Adam is the official Listmaster for Grover Cleveland High School’s Annual Scavenger Hunt, and also the object of Ellie’s affection. He is incredibly chill, suave, and respectful to his peers and to the traditions he upholds as Listmaster. When Fletcher considers running away, it is Adam who sits down and gives him the time and consideration that his mother and sister haven’t been able to offer him (since they, you know, unexpectedly swapped bodies).
“Enjoy the Trip” from Bring It On: The Musical
Audition song suggestions for the character Torrey (mezzo)
Torrey is the meticulous and hard-working assistant to Katherine and her one-woman catering company. Her workload increases to an absurd amount as the wedding creeps closer, and when Katherine and Ellie switch bodies, she reaches a boiling point. Feeling unappreciated, confused, and slightly abused, Torrey surrenders the chaos and quits her job. She later becomes a couple’s counselor.
