Whether it’s a war for a revolution or a demon barber, the theatre is full of stage tricks that lead you to believe that blood has been shed.
As we enter the spookiest season of the year, let’s go through some of the bloodiest shows in theatre history.
8. Hamilton
The Ten Duel Commandments… We might not see any fake blood on stage, but this show is literally written around the death of a character. And after all, Burr shot first.
7. Evil Dead: The Musical
Based on the cult classic film series, this show never made it to the Great White Way. But the supporting role is played by a chainsaw.
6. Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson
Historically speaking, one of the bloodiest on this list. This rock musical ran on Broadway in the fall of 2010 for less than a year, though given high ratings during previews.
5. Les Misérables
Let’s not talk about ‘A Little Fall of Rain.’ Too. Many. Feelings. To. Feel. Is it raining during that scene or is it just the tears streaming down your face and hitting your Playbill?
4. Carrie
It might not be human blood, but pig’s blood definitely counts in this list.
3. Ruthless
The things we do to get a leading role… Did you know Laura Bell Bundy originated the roll of Tina? The child actress that wouldn’t let others get in her way.
2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
No explanation needed. Just stay away from any barber chairs that might have hidden chutes to a meat pie kitchen this Halloween.
1. Titus Andronicus
Here is what it looks like when Shakespeare puts his own spin on the popular tragedies of the 16th century. It’s basically a blood bath. In a recent production at Royal Shakespeare Company, Becky Loftus, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s head of audience insights said, “Pretty much every night there’s somebody who faints or is sick.”
