Set in Venice, the play is considered to be the throbbing heart of opulence and debauchery in the seventeenth century, and is a satire on greed and lust in a money-obsessed society. A rich and childless nobleman, Volpone, and his parasitic lackey, Mosca, conspire to swindle three avaricious bounty hunters, each of whom wants to be Volpone's sole heir. In a well-planned scam, Volpone pretends to be on his deathbed so they will shower him with expensive presents to win his favor and, subsequently, his ill-gotten fortune. Celia, the virtuous young wife of the bounty hunter Corvino, has been described by Mosca as one of the most beautiful women in Italy. Her jealous husband keeps her guarded away, but Volpone, after hearing of her beauty, is determined to make her his own. Volpone convinces Corvino that if he lets Celia lie next to the “dying” Volpone, Volpone will make Corvino his sole heir.see less
