This monologue is taken from The Pink Plays, a collection of 8 short plays, exploring female adolescence. In Bubbs, girls grapple with the onset of their developing breasts while in Red, a girl who is not sure whether or not she has received her period wrestles with the idea that she might be pregnant. In Pains, a teen attempts to insert a tampon for the first time, while in Breathe, friends explore their sexual feelings for each other. In The Gesture, girls weigh the pros and cons of oral sex, while in Split Ends, a girl rejects peer pressure and asserts her individuality. In By Looking, friends learn that “appearance” does not equal “reality," while in Sooner, acquaintances wait for their tortured Beckett-like existence to end. The plays may be performed separately, or together, as an evening.
The collection features an all-female cast, with roles for 16 actresses in their teens (doubling allowed).
While the plays may be played true-to-age for a realistic interpretation, they may also be played by actresses in their 20s and 30s to make a satirical statement.
