It’s very easy to fall into the idea that war is all one sided. Far too often, we find ourselves analyzing war as black and white- us vs the enemy. Drone by Norman Mathews through intense parallelism shows that war is not as simple as many of us believe it to be. The play follows the stories of Salar a Waziristan man and his family as well as Mike the United States drone pilot assigned to follow and watch his every movement. Salar is under suspicion of being part of a terrorist organization, and Mike is responsible for the surveillance of Salar in order to gather enough evidence to support his death. Throughout the play, Mike begins to realize that flying a sniper drone provides a much different perspective than flying a fighter jet, and the job soon begins to have serious effects on his mental health. Mike begins to form a fondness for Salar and his family, a family that Mike believes mirrors his own. Eventually, tensions begin to grow and Salar is framed as part of an upcoming attack on U.S. soldiers. Mike has no choice but to follow orders to strike, and just when he releases the missile, Salar’s family rushes to him and unfortunately add to the growing number of innocent civilian deaths. This loss destroys Mike and is a true depiction of the mental strain countless military men and women face every day. This play showcases the humanity behind war and the raging battle to not lose sight of it.see less
