Bâtard is a dystopian satire set 16 years into the future, with its focus being on gender, as well as the “Us vs. Them” mentality. After an “Unspeakable War” between the males and females of America, “The Society of Choice” rises from the ashes, with the sole purpose of uniting the genders, allowing every citizen to choose their gender at the age of 16. The main event of the play, the Picking Ceremony, passes by in real time, following the child of the leaders of the Society of Choice, P001, being antagonized, advertised, and chastised by both genders, in the hopes of swaying P001’s choice of gender. However, in the end, P001 cannot decide, leading to the demise of the Society of Choice, and the beginning of the Second Unspeakable War.see less
