Ali and his grandfather have an affinity for honey bees—Ali’s Grandfather was a beekeeper in Iraq, but after the start of the war and Colony Collapse Disorder, he lost his livelihood. Ali lost his parents in an explosion during the war, and now, he and his Grandfather seek refuge in America. Jenks is a bully at Ali’s school and wants nothing to do with Ali and his Iraqi past. Jenks has a rocky relationship with his father—a retired war veteran who has lost himself post-war. Ali won’t take the bait from Jenks and befriends him, finding an unlikely peace in their friendship.
