Pressure to be thin. Pressure to be popular. Pressure to have sex. Pressure to do drugs. All of these are very real stresses on today’s teenage girls, many of whom lose their way just trying to survive. Fighting for My Self is a dramatic portrayal of these situations as the characters struggle to win back their self-reliance and hold on to their identities in the face of peer pressure. Karen suffers from bulimia. Kim, a recovering drug addict, must confront her younger sister about her drug use. Meg has just found out she’s pregnant. Liz is fighting depression, and Juanita must deal with the violent death of her best friend. Though focusing on women’s issues, this poignant play is vital for all, offering a message of hope. Written as individual scenes, the play may be produced in its entirety or made shorter by using selected scenes. Flexible staging and the inclusion of mime, dance and a Greek-style chorus create a striking presentation of a timely subject.see less
