This beautifully written play has a powerful impact that is partly emotional, partly psychological and partly metaphysical. There are only two characters: an old man and a young boy. They are universal types, real and familiar. The Old Man, confined to a wheelchair, reads to the boy, who is in his employ, from the works of Walt Whitman. However, lonely and ailing, he not only turns from the sentiments of Whitman, but the affection of the boy and any self-confrontation. The boy, however, understanding that the scorn of the old man is a mere cover-up for the love and dependence the man feels for him, strips the scales from the man’s eyes and makes him face reality. (NOTE: This play includes dialogue and/or subject matter that may be too mature for some audiences.)see less
