Leisure, Labor, Lust is a theatrical and psychological journey through the ravages of poverty and the oppressions of affluence in New York City in 1907. This is the story of Grace Hunter, a brilliant woman with an insatiable hunger for romance, and her tortured husband Harry, a closeted man rapidly losing his grip on reality. This is also the story of Grace’s maid Lucy and Grace and Harry’s shared lover Delancey Morris. Before becoming Grace’s maid, Lucy lived a desperate life as an Irish immigrant on New York’s Lower East Side with her young son and now dead husband. Delancey too, grew up in the tenements, having starved and fought his way into New York society to become first Harry’s, then Grace’s, lover. Leisure, Labor, Lust is inspired by the novelist Edith Wharton’s real life, love affair, marriage and writing style and well as elements from Jacob Riis’ How The Other Half Lives.see less
