5 Stages of Grief: When You Don’t Get the Role You Wanted<\/h3>\n \"\"<\/a><\/span>

It\u2019s happened to all of us. You work for weeks on the material. You nail your\u00a0audition. You know in your heart of hearts that you\u2019re gonna get it.\u00a0You\u2019re totally gonna be the lead.<\/p>\n

Then the cast list goes up.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/div><\/div>

They gave the lead role to some sophomore who just joined the program. And, you\u2019re 98% sure they don\u2019t even have Hamilton<\/em>\u00a0in their phone\u2019s music collection. And then…it begins.<\/p>\n

STAGE #1: Disappointment in yourself.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div><\/div>

You learned the entire libretto before your audition, and you even got the haircut the character had in the original Broadway production! HOW COULD THIS POSSIBLY HAPPEN?<\/p>\n

STAGE #2: Anger at the director.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div><\/div>

HOW DARE THEY? You consider quitting. (Then you realize you won\u2019t get the lead in the next musical if you quit, so you don\u2019t.) BUT YOU\u2019RE STILL REALLY ANGRY.<\/p>\n

STAGE #3: Bitterness at\u00a0the person who got the role.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div><\/div>

Rehearsals begin. Every time that person gets up on stage, your blood boils. You hate the way they sing their solo number. This goes on for every rehearsal.<\/p>\n

<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/div>

STAGE #4: Realizing it was the best casting choice.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div><\/div>

It\u2019s opening night and it\u2019s time for the lead\u2019s solo. They nail the high note. In that moment, you realize: you still love theatre, and this person was the best choice for the role. There\u2019s still the next musical.<\/p>\n

So you rehearse and rehearse and rehearse! YOU KILL YOUR NEXT AUDITION.<\/p>\n

And then? Stage #5.<\/p>\n
