I swear it\u2019s not. It\u2019s also not just for people who have been in the theatre business for years. It\u2019s for high school and college students, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPirate\u201d is a word that I borrowed after working with Michael Stephenson on his\u00a0thesis, a feature-length\u00a0horror film, Blackwater Rd. (I was to be the film\u2019s costumer.) He asked, \u201cDo you know what pirate filmmaking is?\u201d I said I didn\u2019t, but that it sounded dangerous, exciting, and fun. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what it is,\u201d he replied. Stephenson, the founder and lead writer over at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturallysignificant.com\"><i>Culturally Significant!<\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(a nerd blog for all things 80s movies, pop culture, and geek swag) was inspired by\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guerrilla_filmmaking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cguerrilla film\u201d style filmmaking<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: low budgets, skeleton crews, simple props, and no permission to film on location. Because Stephenson also esteems production value and honesty, he revised the guerrilla technique to add crowd-sourced funding, professional connections, talented artists, and an organized and focused approach to indie film. Thus was born the term \u201cpirate filmmaking\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as pirate filmmaking merges the production values of professional studio films with the extraordinary talents of independent film artists, pirate\u00a0<\/span><i>theatre<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0unites the quality of professional theatrical productions with the spontaneity and passion of guerrilla theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guerrilla_theatre\">Guerrilla theatre<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0originated during the Vietnam War as a way for American performers to protest the United States\u2019 presence overseas. Guerrilla theatre troupes performed scenes in public venues (parks, sidewalks, government monuments) as a means of political protest, and the content of these scenes often involved material that served to shock viewers. When we think of guerrilla theatre\u00a0<\/span><i>now<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we think of productions with bare-bones sets, old costumes, little to no sound, and simple props, all performed in a black box or on the lawn of your high school or university. Yes, there are advantages to guerrilla theatre as we know it today. It\u2019s quick, it\u2019s easy, and it\u2019s fun. Photography.<\/span><\/h5>\n<br><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pirate theatre, as I see it, is an organized theatrical production that has<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An original or published script, and if published,\u00a0<\/span><i>paid royalties<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Your ship.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rehearsal schedule. (Your pirate code.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One or two identifiable and titled leaders: director and stage manager. (Your captain and first mate.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cast and crew that exercises their multiple performance and technical talents, sometimes crossing performance\/technical barriers. (Your crew.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An invited audience, with or without ticket sales. (Your league of allies.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtained permission to be performed in its respective venue. (Your\u00a0<\/span><i>legally<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and temporarily commandeered territory.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom from filling season obligations due to financial and venue limitations. (Your ability to sail when you can and when you want.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outline above is vital for two reasons: first, professional theatres may not be for everyone, and second, young artists need a space where they can practice professional theatre if they wish to build their resume.\u00a0<\/span><b>An original script\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gives writers an opportunity to explore their craft.\u00a0<\/span><b>Paying royalties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for published works instills an awareness of copyright law and artistic integrity.\u00a0<\/span><b>Rehearsal schedules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0show respect for artists\u2019 time.\u00a0<\/span><b>Having one or two main leaders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0forces a sense of personal accountability for the production.\u00a0<\/span><b>A team of artists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0who have secondary skills helps amass resources and gives actors and technicians the chance to explore other cast and crew positions.\u00a0<\/span><b>Sales of tickets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0help gain revenue for all artists involved and give credibility to the production. It also presents an opportunity to transfer any ticket sales to a local charity.\u00a0<\/span><b>Permission and payment to rent a venue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0fosters business and communication skills. Productions at new play festivals are pirate theatre. Professional productions during the year that do not have a dedicated performance venue year-round are pirate theatre. And, what\u2019s more, pirate theatre isn\u2019t limited to the seasoned and experienced. Productions by high school and college students that follow the guidelines above are pirate theatre. How many times have you wanted to do a night of one-acts or an evening cabaret with your high school friends? What about when you wanted to stage the full-length play you wrote for your college playwriting class? What about when you had that idea to produce an adapted version of Shakespeare\u2019s<\/span><i>\u00a0Macbeth<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0with your friends after graduation? Those ideas can be brought to life! It provides a close-knit community among the director, actors, and techs. Since 2013, pirate theatre has enriched my life and has allowed me to be involved with three Orlando Fringe Festival productions (and indirectly involved with another). In 2013, I was the costume and set designer for\u00a0<\/span><i>Arts or Crafts<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a comedy about the distinction between how art and craft is perceived. In 2014, I co-wrote, with four other playwrights,\u00a0<\/span><i>20-NOTHING,\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a satire and celebration of the Millennial generation. In May 2016, I was an actor and projection-screen-handyman for Corey Volence\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i>Space<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a science fiction drama about four astronauts at the edge of the universe.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, though I wasn\u2019t a member of the production, I was asked to photograph Michael Knight\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i>The Foreplay<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a satirical look at the writing of the United States Bill of Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-5 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"http:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/content_piratetheatre5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam DeMedico, Zander Krenger, and Issac Bannasch in Michael Knight\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foreplay\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the 2016 Orlando International Fringe Festival. Photography.<\/span><\/h5>\n<br><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of community, informal education, and professional development I gained through my involvement with these productions, intense or limited, inspired me to develop more of my own projects in the future. I learned that art feeds art, and positive connections encourage personal and professional growth. I wasn&#8217;t even out of college when I started working with &#8220;pirate theatre&#8221; productions, but it helped me ease into the theatre community much more easily than if I had waited to jump in after college.\u00a0<\/span>Never let your age or educational level hold you back from creating art. If you need help, ask. There is bound to be someone else who shares your vision.
