Dramaturgy is one of them, and it lends a hand to every single aspect of the theatre, all from behind the lenses of your prescription glasses (or the cool faux ones you wear to look totally hip).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a dramaturg, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help give the performance a solid foundation upon which to build a story. You can help directors, designers, and playwrights refine their vision, pinpoint their goals, and find creative ways to express themes and tones. Check out the types of dramaturgs and their responsibilities below to get an idea of what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can do to bring a story to life on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Production Dramaturgs (PDs)<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-2 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1_dramaturgy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDs work closely with the director (and sometimes the playwright for new works) to provide a solid foundation for a production\u2019s artistic and technical elements. PDs do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of research, and they\u2019re the resident expert on the time period and location in which the play is set. The PD informs the director, the cast, and the design team about the play\u2019s history, what it was addressing at the time it was written, and how it may be important today. Production dramaturgs may generally:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conduct historical research of the play\u2019s time period, location, economic conditions, and social customs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyze the play\u2019s theme, tone, and content to determine its messaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research unknown or obscure words and compile a vocabulary list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect images to use in preparing the director, cast, and crew to understand the world of the play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compile educational pamphlets for the director, cast, and crew.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a timeline of important events that happen in the play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research the playwright.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare and deliver a short presentation for the cast and crew.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write study guides for schools and groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Institutional Dramaturgs (IDs)<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/3_dramaturgy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutional dramaturgs work closely with the artistic director of a theatre in designing a theatre\u2019s season. IDs also evaluate potential scripts for content and how appropriate they are for the theatre\u2019s character and how suitable they are for a theatre\u2019s particular venue. Institutional dramaturgs may generally:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work for the theatre as a resident dramaturg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help plan a theatre\u2019s season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborate with directors in rehearsal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adapt classical works for the stage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organize community outreach and production talk-backs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write program notes and press releases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write grant proposals for funding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work closely with the education staff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serve as the literary manager.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommend scripts (both published and new) to the artistic director.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4>New Work Dramaturgs (NWDs)<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-4 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2_dramaturgy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NWDs are very similar to the institutional dramaturg and production dramaturg, but have a more limited scope &#8212; NWDs work closely with playwrights during the creation and writing of a new play. Sometimes, based on the needs of the playwright, they may serve as editor or script consultant, analyzing the components of the play and how they effectively (or ineffectively) tie the story together. If a play uses a foreign or original language, the\u00a0NWD may compile a vocabulary list for the playwright, too.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(If an institutional dramaturg also completes the duties below, they may also be called the theatre\u2019s Literary Manager.)
