They’re in the corner during rehearsal. Their hand is over their mouth. Their brow is furrowed. And they can’t say the thing they’re dying to say.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. They mentally check out.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

Although they\u2019ll pay attention and give you notes on your bajillionth run-through, they\u2019d really rather be sleeping, but they don\u2019t because they care!<\/p>\n

<\/div>

2. When someone forgets a line in final dress rehearsal.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

And yes, the director DID notice.<\/p>\n

<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/div>

3. When they give you a note for the fifth time.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

Take this advice: take the note the first time. You don\u2019t want to see what happens.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0When you make a good choice for your character.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

It\u2019s like you read their mind and started to really connect with your character. Good job!<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0When you make an ineffective choice for your character.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

Maybe you went over the top, maybe it was the wrong emotion — but whatever it was they just need you to stop ASAP.<\/p>\n

6. When they see the show come together for the first time.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

They may not show it during notes, but seeing the show they created is absolutely unforgettable.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0When they see you touching a prop that isn\u2019t yours.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

You know you shouldn\u2019t be touching it, they know you shouldn\u2019t be touching it, so don\u2019t touch it unless you want to see the director lose it.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0When they hear talking in the wings.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

One of the most infuriating things for a director is hearing talking backstage during their show, so you have two options: Hope they don\u2019t hear you, or zip it.<\/p>\n

When a costume piece rips.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

Take extra care of your costumes, so you don\u2019t have to see their done face.<\/p>\n

10. When the show opens.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

You\u2019ve worked hard, received many notes, and maybe a few screams but it\u2019s time to open, and your director really couldn\u2019t be prouder. Make sure to thank them!<\/p>\n
