Determine how long your monologue should be.<\/h4>\n<span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-2 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"http:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wtch.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need a one-minute or a two-minute monologue? Check the website of the college or theatre you are auditioning for or simply ask your teacher\/professor how long the monologue should be. There are many Shakespearean monologues that fit within these time constraints. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><br><h4>2. Decide: comedic or dramatic?<\/h4>\n<span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"http:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/comedicdramatic.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the type of show\/role you\u2019re auditioning for, you should choose a monologue that fits the mood of the show: silly and romantic, or serious and frightening? For example, if you were auditioning for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macbeth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (political drama), you wouldn\u2019t perform a monologue from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (love comedy). Conversely, if you were auditioning for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Taming of the Shrew<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (marriage comedy), you wouldn\u2019t want to do a monologue from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antony and Cleopatra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (military drama).<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><br><h4>3. Your type is how other people see you. Are you an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ing\u00e9nue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lead, or a character role? Knowing what type you are and working <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that type greatly increases your chances of getting cast. Below is a list of types and the corresponding roles that align with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Male <\/b><b>ing\u00e9nue<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the young male love interest; traditionally handsome; innocent, unassuming, romantic (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romeo, Lysander, Ferdinand, Valentine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Female ing\u00e9nue:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the young female love interest; traditionally beautiful; sweet, innocent, gentle (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juliet, Hermia, Miranda, Cordelia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Male lead:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the older, more experienced protagonist; sometimes a lover (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duke Orsino, King Lear, Macbeth, Prospero<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Female lead:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the older, more experienced protagonist; sometimes a lover (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gertrude, Lady Macbeth, Portia, Olivia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Character actor: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes any gender; usually a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Physical_comedy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><u>clowning role<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or silly; sometimes a lover (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Falstaff, Mistress Quickly, Puck, Ariel, Grumio, Dogberry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><br><h4>4. Make sure the monologue opens with active conflict.<\/h4>\n<span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-5 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"http:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/conflict.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that the character should open the monologue with an active problem they are dealing with and trying to solve, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling a story. It can be an external problem they have with another character or an internal struggle. A great example of this is Viola\u2019s monologue from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twelfth Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/product\/3788\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><u>I left no ring with her: what means this lady?<\/u><\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or Laertes\u2019 monologue \u00a0from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamlet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/product\/121468\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><u>Think it no more. \/ For nature crescent does not grow alone\u2026<\/u><\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><br><h4>5. Search for at least 3 emotional shifts in the monologue.<\/h4>\n<span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-6 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"http:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/emotional-shift.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><br><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Shakespeare is long-winded, his words aren\u2019t boring. He\u2019s packed tons of emotional and intellectual material in his monologues. Try to find at least three emotional beats where the character changes their emotion slightly. They may change emotions to further their agenda, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they may change emotions because they\u2019ve said something that causes them to have a revelation. Punctuation can also determine these shifts. Can you relate to their feeling of elation at being in absolute, undeniable love with another person (Julia from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Gentlemen of Verona<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)? Do you admire their skill at manipulating situations like a politician (Iago from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Othello<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)? If you do, great! If you don\u2019t, seek material in another monologue.
