However, for juniors who still have another year to go, it\u2019s essential that you familiarize yourself with the plays that created the foundation of modern theatre. Below are five reasons to pick up a Greek or Roman play <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get to know your Greek and Roman theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-2 hover-type-none\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/performerstuff.com\/mgs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/blog_5-Reasons-to-Know-Your-Greek-and-Roman-Theatre.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><h4>1.\u00a0The first actor.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none\"> <img alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a high school thespian, you\u2019re probably familiar with the story of Thespis. If you have no idea who Thespis is, it\u2019s time for a history lesson! The cult of Dionysus staged exciting and elaborate songs and dances telling the stories of Greek myth in choral form. One priest of Dionysus, Thespis, stepped from the chorus and became the first actor, engaging in a dialogue with the chorus. (He was also the first winner of a theatrical award in the first competition for writing tragedy in 534 BC.) <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4>2. The foundation for comedy and drama today.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-4 hover-type-none\"> <img alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles make up the trio of Greek writers who gave us such important works as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oedipus <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trilogy (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antigone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lysistrata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trojan Women<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medea,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agamemnon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Following Thespis\u2019s move, Aeschylus, writer of over 80 plays, introduced a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actor, creating drama between two characters. Then, Sophocles added a third actor, one-upping Aeschylus. The works of Aeschylus tend to deal more with public social and governmental themes while the works of Sophocles concentrate more on personal struggles and relationships. Because play competitions in Greece were so popular, playwrights wrote <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tons <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of quality plays to win awards, and so, today, we have stellar examples of drama and comedy. In addition, Greek plays heavily influence the content and style of Roman works, so much so that there is not an original work of Roman theatre that does not borrow from a Greek play. (But <\/span><span style=\"color: #ba9bc9;\"><a style=\"color: #ba9bc9;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ancient-literature.com\/rome_seneca_thyestes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><i>Thyestes <\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Roman playwright Seneca the Younger is a pretty cool play. Check it out.)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4>3.\u00a0Deep, complicated, and interesting characters.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-5 hover-type-none\"> <img alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not familiar with the juicy characters Greek and Roman theatre offer, you are so <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">totally<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missing out. Get your hands on the characters of Lysistrata (the woman who commands an army of other women who are fed up with war), or Antigone (a girl who must dare to bury her dead brother when it\u2019s been forbidden by her uncle, the king), or Mercury (the god who has to disguise himself as a servant to keep tabs on his dad, Jupiter), or Atreus (the evil, angry, and vindictive man who cooks his nephews in a stew and serves it to his brother who stole the throne &#8212; and his wife.)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">4. Concepts that transcend time.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-6 hover-type-none\"> <img alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not all about togas and sandals. Greek and Roman theatre is a lot like Shakespeare when it comes to updating the staging and time period to make the story more accessible to modern audiences. We may not be totally familiar with the government complications of ancient Greece and Rome, but social issues and personal struggles transcend time. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lysistrata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been staged with references to World War II, Vietnam, and the War in Iraq. And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oedipus Rex<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been staged as a modern drama with contemporary clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-one-full fusion-layout-column fusion-column-last fusion-spacing-yes section-body-post\" style=\"margin-top:;margin-bottom:;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper\"><h4>5.\u00a0Audition with a classical piece.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span style=\"border:1px solid ;\" class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-7 hover-type-none\"> <img alt=\"\" class=\"img-responsive\"\/><\/span><\/div><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a bonus, if you\u2019re familiar with at least two pieces of Greek and Roman theatre (a comedy and a tragedy), you\u2019ll be better prepared for those college auditions coming up.
