Are you interested in doing voiceovers, but have no experience, no demo, and nothing on your resume to prove you know what you\u2019re doing?\u00a0 Here\u2019s how to get some credits on your resume and<\/em>\u00a0some practical \u201con the job\u201d experience.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Seek out volunteer opportunities.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

You need to explore, play, and try things with your voice, without shrinking under the pressure of winning or losing an audition. Succumbing to the fear\u00a0of messing up and being afraid will cause casting producers to\u00a0write you off as \u201cinexperienced.\u201d\u00a0Remember your resume doesn\u2019t have dollar signs. Producers and casting people don\u2019t know whether you were paid or not. It\u2019s the credits on your resume that show you are experienced and competent to get the job done.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Record\u00a0voicemail messages for friends, family, or neighbors.<\/h4>\n

Probably every other person you know has a small business on the side. Doing voicemail is also an effective \u201ccalling card\u201d for you, giving you something to brag about when letting current contacts know what you\u2019ve done lately. \u201cI\u2019m the voice of Rachel\u2019s Yoga Studio.\u201d<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Voice someone\u2019s web site.<\/h4>\n

Every business or service has a website. Ask friends and family to add video and audio to their plain old web site, with\u00a0you<\/em>\u00a0narrating! Then you can lead your contacts to visit \u201crachelsyoga.com\u201d to hear you. That\u2019s like having a demo without having a real demo yet!<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Participate in student projects at colleges or universities.<\/h4>\n

Every term, there are projects a-plenty in the film and audio\/sound departments. (In Orlando, FL, check out Full Sail University, UCF, or Valencia College.)<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Volunteer for Reading Service for the Blind.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

You are on headphones being recorded. It\u2019s great for keeping up your sight reading chops, and it looks good on your\u00a0resume.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Be an on-air talent for radio fund drives.<\/h4>\n

Contact the broadcast fund raising manager for stations like WMFE, who are always looking for volunteers. You never know who you will meet or who can introduce you to someone who needs a voiceover artist.<\/p>\n

7. Start with your own job or your friends\/neighbors\/family members\u2019 jobs.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

For example, Florida is a \u201cright to work\u201d state in terms of voiceover, so you can get your own work directly. It is totally legal to walk right up to a company and give them your demo and inquire about voiceover work.<\/p>\n

Ask them, \u201cWho does your commercials?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDoes your company do in-house training videos?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cTalking books?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDoes your company have an AV department?\u201d Be pleasantly persistent until you get the name of a contact, and you need to ask them if they can introduce you.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Now, you don\u2019t want to work for free if that company would have paid someone to come in.\u00a0 That is \u201cundercutting\u201d and hurts the industry.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about doing voiceovers that are unpaid to begin with.<\/p>\n

8. Be a live announcer.<\/h4>\n
\"\"<\/span><\/div>

Volunteer to be an MC announcer at local club functions, award ceremonies, your school, in church, etc. It\u2019s still voice work, and it\u2019s exposure, experience, and the credits you need.\u00a0 Someone in the audience may be your next client.<\/p>\n

Every volunteer opportunity is a \u201clead\u201d for meeting others in the voiceover industry who may\u00a0hire you. Just get your voice out there for people to hear!<\/p>\n
